Summer is here, with late sunsets and early sunrises. These long days are a particular temptation to those who enjoy outdoor recreation, and hikers are no exception. Long summer days offer hiking enthusiasts the chance to go on long day hikes, especially enjoyable for those who enjoy spending hours at a time outdoors, but don’t have time for overnight excursions often.
In addition to long days, however, summer brings hot weather. Inexperienced and seasoned hikers alike must remember to take into consideration the effects of heat while hiking, and plan their trails accordingly. While experienced hikers may know these things, sometimes the excitement of planning a day-long trek overshadows caution.
You can still enjoy an all-day hike in the summer, of course. The key is to plan carefully. First, consider the location of the trail. A steep, barren hillside is not a good choice for a hot day, even if it it’s a relatively short hike. Consider finding a trail that offers shady woods and gentle terrain. The longer your hike will be, the more important it is that large portions of it be level or downhill, and offer protection from the heat of the sun.
Remember to carry an adequate supply of water, to dress appropriately, and to wear sunscreen.
